![]() The dozens and dozens of side trails begin either at the edge of the Drive, or a short distance from the Drive via the Appalachian Trail. You can get within a very few miles of any part of the park either by car on the Drive, or by foot on the Appalachian Trail. The dotted line that parallels the Drive is the Appalachian Trail, which extends some 2,000 miles from Maine to Georgia about 101 miles of it are within the park. The shaded area on the maps is the park the wiggly solid line that runs the length of it is Skyline Drive. Shenandoah National Park is so long and narrow that three maps ( North District, Central District, and South District) are needed to show it. Here and there the park touches the Shenandoah Valley on the west side or the Piedmont on the east but throughout most of its length the park boundary is partway up the mountain slope. It varies in width from less than one to about 13 miles, so that the views from peaks and overlooks include not only the Blue Ridge itself, but also the patchwork of woods, farmlands and orchards on either side. It is unlawful to feed the wildlife.Shenandoah National Park is long and narrow, straddling the crest of Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains for nearly 75 miles. At 35 mph, you’ll stand the best chance of a fun and exciting wildlife encounter rather than an unpleasant wildlife experience! If you want a closer look, be sure to pull completely off the Drive and stay in your vehicle. Watch carefully for these animals who may dart across your path without warning. Be sure you will clear Marys Rock Tunnel (just south of Thornton Gap entrance from Route 211) at 12’8″.ĭeer, black bear, wild turkey, and a host of other woodland animals call Shenandoah home and regularly cross Skyline Drive in their daily travels. Note: RVs, camping trailers, and horse trailers are welcome, but be prepared to shift into low gear. There are nearly 70 overlooks that offer stunning views of the Shenandoah Valley to the west or the rolling Piedmont to the east. The speed limit is 35 mph, so you can roll down your windows, feel the breeze and experience every curve and turn of this beautiful drive.
